Thanks Jim! I was also surprised by how well the little camera has stood up the test of time and got better images out of it than I originally expected. Carlos the Retinette is a wonderful little camera. It is the photographer not the machine. I was amazed by the lifelike qualities. Thank you for your kind comment Mick! And what you mention about finding slides is another that I really like about film; the wonder of running across some old negatives, some forgotten slides. Lovely review thanks.
I do have a lot of fun shooting with a manual Voigtlander viewfinder camera though, so I get what you mean by being involved in the photo. Love these old 50s and 60s cameras! Very nice review of a very special camera. That was the camera that inspired me to take pictures and as a child, it seemed like such a complex machine.
I guess it was alongside my Kodak Instamatic X in the mids! Just took it out for a spin and got similar results to you, Carlos, on Ilford HP5.
Wish I could post a couple here. Also came with the original leather case which was pretty cool. Well, it seems these cameras have a tendency to be passed down the paternal line. I am so glad to have found this lovely website. Well as it happens I was given a Retinette 1A today and am pleased I found this article.
Purchased 3 rolls of Tri-X after being inspired by your review and your photos! I borrowed one of these from a friend a while back, and I was stunned by the results, and I really enjoyed the shooting experience. I think they are wonderful little cameras that get you in touch with the raw act of photography! Glad to hear people still appreciate it out there! Ive got to say, the photos that have come from that little camera are fabulous, really impressive and the DOP is beautiful.
Very informative, interesting and most of all, it prompted me to go and buy one. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email.
