As far as the data and programs, backup the hard drive to another one. You will keep everything on the HD as long as you back it up I agree with Jstear post above "I say to just reinstall and stop wasting time on it. More than likely it's messed up some things in your registry. Seen that, been there done that. Copy your data or image the drive so you can mount it later after a install to get your data back.

But sounds like the registry is messed up. Format and re-install. After you patch the PC and get everything current for security patching, image it so you have a restore CD to come back to. Then go from there. But agree with Jstear, you are only spinning your wheels in trying to figure out what is messed up in the registry. You'll save yourself lots of time and you'll know everything is healthy.

The first application you should install is antivirus. Try a restore point before the known infection if you can, it might work. One thing you probably already checked but I didn't see in your post is that you double-checked proxies. Lots of viruses install proxies. Yes, re-install would have been faster but as i posted, they had some programs that would be lost. Now it runs Firefox and MS securtiy essentials. The search and Windows update do not work from start menu but do work from drop down menus or IE going to the website.
