The spinner can be fixed to the board or moved around to make play easier. The pieces in The Game of Life can vary from set to set. However, in the most modern version of the game, each player will have a car token. These have 6 holes in the back of them, which fit pegs. This peg is you; throughout the game, you might collect other pegs. These pegs represent people, babies, and pets. These pegs can add extra income to your retirement at the end of the game. Each deck of cards does something different. House cards are used when you want to buy a house. Once you own the house, you can later sell it. Career and College Career cards are chosen at the start of the game. Choosing a career card allows you to make more money early on. Pet cards allow you to add a pet to your car. They can also reward you money or cost you money as well.
You can purchase long term investment cards at the start of your turn. These cards reward you money every time you or another player spins a certain number. You can only choose one of these cards though. There is plenty of money involved in The Game of Life. A player can still collect on his stock while waiting for the rest to finish.
The player will have the option of retiring to the Millionaire Estates or Countryside Acres. If a player chooses the former, other players can take their Life tiles if the pile runs out. If a player retires to Countryside Acres, his Life tiles are safe. After every player has retired, the players who retired at Millionaire Estates count their money.
The player with the most money takes four Life tiles. After that, all the players turn their Life tiles over. The players then add the numbers on the Life tiles and the amount of money they have, and the player with the highest amount wins. This means you receive the amount of money listed on your Salary card from the bank. Red spaces require that you stop on that space even if you have not finished your turn, and complete the instructions listed on the space.
Throughout the game there are spaces known as "Career" spaces. These spaces have the symbols of specific careers on the space, and give instructions, typically regarding how much money you must pay the person who holds that career card. If another player has that career card, pay them that amount specified. If you have the career card, pay nothing.
If no one has that card, pay the bank. There are several other spaces that require special instruction. If you land on a "Change Career" space during game play, you may draw one Career card at random as your new career. Don't forget that with a new career comes a new salary.
